FAQ
Answers to common questions about backupd, from what is supported to encryption, storage and billing.
Does backupd work with managed databases?
Yes, as long as the database is reachable from the internet over TLS and the user you give backupd can run the engine's dump tool. That includes managed PostgreSQL and MySQL services, MongoDB Atlas, and Convex Cloud.
Can I back up a database in a private network?
Not yet. Private networks, VPC peering, SSH tunnels and agents aren't supported. The database needs a public address.
Does a backup slow down or lock my database?
Backups read from a consistent snapshot. PostgreSQL dumps run on an exported snapshot in a read-only transaction. MySQL uses --single-transaction without table locks, so InnoDB tables keep accepting writes. A backup still reads all your data, so schedule it outside your busiest hours if you can.
Do you support point-in-time recovery or incremental backups?
Not yet. Every backup is a full copy that restores on its own.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes. Every backup is compressed and encrypted with age before it is stored, and your credentials are encrypted at rest. See How your data is protected.
Can backupd read my backups?
Yes. backupd keeps its own key for your workspace so it can run restores and restore tests. There is no mode yet where only you can decrypt. If you need one, tell us at support@backupd.dev.
Can I get my data out if I stop using backupd?
Yes. Add your own key, then download backups encrypted, or keep copies in your own bucket on Pro. Restore them with age, zstd and your engine's own tools. See Restore without backupd. You can also download decrypted dumps from the app at any time, even without a plan.
What happens to my backups if my plan ends?
The workspace becomes read-only. Backups stop, but every stored backup stays available to download and restore, and none are deleted. See Trial, changes and cancelling.
How is storage billed?
On the compressed size of your backups, never the size of your database. Extra storage above your plan is billed per GB, and a spending cap can limit it. See Extra storage and spending cap.
Why is a backup "Unverified"?
It hasn't been restore-tested yet. Starter tests the latest backup once a day. Pro tests every backup up to 10 GB, and the latest larger one once a day. Owners and admins can click Re-run restore test on any backup.
Why is my schedule running at a slightly different time?
Each database gets a small fixed offset of up to 15 minutes so that many databases scheduled for the same time don't all start at once. See Schedules and retention.
How do I change a database's password in backupd?
Connection strings can't be edited. Add the database again with the new credentials, and remove the old one once the new one has a good backup. Removing a database deletes its backups from backupd, so download any you want to keep first.
