# backupd Storage (/docs/storage)

Every backup is stored in **backupd Storage**, a private store managed by backupd. It is included on every plan and can't be removed. Backups are encrypted before they reach it, so it only ever holds encrypted files.

## How storage is measured [#how-storage-is-measured]

Storage is the **compressed, encrypted size** of your successful backups, never the size of your database. A 40 GB database that compresses to 8 GB uses 8 GB per backup.

| Plan | Included | Extra storage |
| ------- | -------- | ------------- |
| Starter | 50 GB | $0.10 per GB |
| Pro | 150 GB | $0.08 per GB |

See [Extra storage and spending cap](/docs/billing/extra-storage) for how extra storage is billed and how to cap it.

To use less storage, shorten retention or back up less often. See [Schedules and retention](/docs/databases/schedules-and-retention).

## Browse your files [#browse-your-files]

**Storage** lists the backup files from every database, organized into one folder per database. Open a file to see its details, download it or restore it.

## Downloads [#downloads]

Download a backup decrypted, or encrypted with a short-lived link. See [Download a backup](/docs/restoring/download).

## Keep a second copy [#keep-a-second-copy]

On Pro you can also copy every backup to a bucket you own, for example to follow the 3-2-1 rule. See [Your own bucket](/docs/storage/destinations).
